OVERVIEW

Shivapuri–Nagarjun National Park is one of Nepal’s most beautiful, pleasant, and important national parks. It lies to the north of Kathmandu District and is located very close to the capital city, making it a popular destination for tourists, students, researchers, office workers, and local residents. The main entrance of the park is in the Shivapuri area, which provides an opportunity to connect with lush forests, hills, and nature. The major plant species found in the park include Salla, Chilaune, Katus, Uttis, Kaphal, Rhododendron, Bamboo, Paiyu, Bar and Peepal. The rhododendrons that bloom in the spring season make the park even more attractive. The main wildlife species found here include Deer, Leopard, Bear, Monkey, Langurs, Jackal, Porcupine, Wild Cats, Rabbits and others. These animals live safely in the dense forests and peaceful environment. Shivapuri–Nagarjun National Park is also famous for birdwatching. Birds such as Pheasants, Crows, Eagle, Maina, Flycatcher, Owl, Pigeon, Dhukur and many other species can be seen here. In addition, small insects, reptiles, and butterflies are also part of the park’s rich biodiversity. This national park is an ideal place for hiking, trekking, birdwatching, nature observation, biodiversity study, peaceful environment observation, research and exploration. Visitors can walk along various trails within the park. From the hills of Shivapuri, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley, which gives travelers a joyful and memorable experience. From a religious and cultural perspective, the Shivapuri–Nagarjun area is also very important. There are temples, monasteries, and small shrines such as Shivapuri Temple, Nagarjun Monastery, and other sacred sites where devotees come to worship, chant mantras, or meditate. Especially during Maha Shivaratri, large numbers of local and external devotees visit the area. From an environmental point of view, the park holds great importance. Its forests, hills, natural resources, and rich biodiversity make it well known for environmental observation, study, and research. As a natural heritage rich in environmental and biological diversity, this national park plays an important role in wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection, and maintaining environmental balance in Nepal.
